I have considered often since the reunion why it seemed to be such a mellow and positive experience for the participants. I've had different thoughts, and maybe not ones that contradict each other.
There seems to be a desire to reconnect with a time when we had very intense relationships with other people, when we were trying very hard to figure out who we were, and when we had the immense privilege of living in a place where we were taken seriously.
I have also thought that it might be that people at the reunion were aself-selected group....that no one with awful experiences to remember or report would travel hundreds or thousands of miles to do so. There might be something to this, but I have exchanged notes with several classmates that did not go the reunion who seem to be getting on with positive lives.
There is also the "Gettysburg reunion" theory. My son is deep into learning about the Civil War, so I have seen recently several pictures of the reunion of 1913, in which Confederate veterans of Pickett's charge walked accross the same field as 50 years before and fell into the arms of the Union defenders. (I know, "Adolesence in Amenia" isn't quite the American Civil War, but hyperbole is fun..)
Finally there is the maturity and self-acceptance theory. I was trying the explain the experience to a friend, who thought it would be a little odd if people our age didn't enjoy themselves at a reunion. By the time one gets to fifty, he thought, one should have come to terms with who and what one is, and not be very concerned with making a show for others or oneself.
It did comfort and encourage me a lot to see so many people getting on with life in an adult way. Love, and keep on keeping' on...

It has been brought to my attention that the next reunion will be in 2005, not 2004! I guess I included 2000 as part of the 5 years, so my apologies are herewith! It must be the reunion fever I started to begin with. Sorry for the error everyone. Hope you all are back to your normal routines. It was great and I'm still feeling it! Hope you all are well and, oh, by the way, my phone number on the list is ALSO a tpyo in case anyone has tried to get a hold of me. The correct home number is 203-431-6189. You can also reach me during the day on my cell phone at 203-470-0140. Always looking forward to hearing from any and all of you out there. Ciao

Let's all put on our deerstalker caps in the hunt for the missing yearbooks....I remember finding two yearbooks on my chair when I packed up my "camp" at the pond late Saturday afternoon. There was not a name in them, at least one that I found easily. I think they were from the years after I left Barlow (1966). There were some folks I didn't know still chatting there ("youngsters" apparently, that is, post '66). I passed them along to them, and they said they would try to lead them home. I have to think these might be David's books, because he spent a lot of time at the pond Saturday morning. Does anyone recognize themselves in this scenario? To whom did the books go next?

Hi, Barlovians--I hate to be petty--but those yearbooks were shared in trust and mean more to me than you can know. Whoever has them is free to copy them, of course; I only want to know where they are. Please, guys, it's been 30 years. Love, David

And thank you, Bob, for calling up all those people and getting them to attend the reunion. You really helped make it the success that it was.
Everybody, check out the picture pages (just click on the Reunion 2000 link on the homepage). Some of Jon Landers' pictures are up now too. And, all of you who took pictures, SEND THEM IN (click the link above) and I will post them as well. I just read Leopold's post about hunting with his son and it prompted me to let you all in on my little celebration for today: My elderl son, Adam, is celebrating his 31st birthday today! Hurray!
I'm still coming down to earth after the heady, memory filled time we spent together a few short weeks ago. I'm still buzzing with how wonderful it was to be with all of you. My only regret is that there was too little time spent with each of you, but we had no control over that. I want to extend an open invitation to anyone who'll be in my end of the world (South Florida) to at least give me a call and, hopefully, get together even for a cup of coffee.
I finally got around to bringing my film to the developer and will have the disc back by Wednesday. I'll be in touch with Juan to see how we go about making them available to all.
Love to all

Even though I drove home the Sunday after the reunion I feel like its taken me about a week or more to fully arrive. My head was just so full of you all and the incredible moments of the reunion. And being back in that spot was so amazing! The place was so layered with memories, everywhere! It was a truely special event and my only regret was that in the intense and somewhat frantic energy there were many people I would have loved to have had more time with. My love to all - Graham

dear gang as I drove up 22 to see my Mom, who has been ailing, in Great Barrington last week I felt kind of wistful going by the signs for Barlow 2000. It kind of astounded me that I had in three years never walked around the bend in the road (past the White House) and looked out to the west--the fabuloso view that we saw when we went to the Cascade Winery. Our whole lives were on that hill, in the theatre, the art barns and all the other stuff we were doing. Anyway, it was great to see all of you and to see with a little more perspective how special the place and how special the People. Love to all Scott

Its already been a few weeks, and I'm just begining to catch my emotional breath - how lucky we all are to have shared such a miraculous experience together - I don't even think Bob Treat et al were aware of the profound impact Barlow would have on all of us -- and how lucky we all are to have had Jon and Juan ( hard getting used to that Jack) work so hard at reuniting that magic - even people that I wasn't close to felt very close in the reunion - I'm just so sorry every single person couldn't be there to share - especially Ben Hedges - so for the moment, thank you all for helping bring me back to myself and to feel the reassurance that all of those years were not just a wonderful dream.

The Reunion was great. So good to see so many people. We really look better in person, as my reunion pics amply demonstrate. I can't begin to adequately thank Jon and Kathy and Juan for making the weekend possible and bringing so many of us together again. The picnic beside the Yellow House was wonderful. The school house looks practically the same and the gym(study hall) still rains dazed flies onto those below. Jane's and my visit to our rooms in the Guest House was eerie. Amazingly, the stairs have been carpeted, making a late night escape much easier to accomplish. I can't believe that smoking was permitted in the lounge the year after I graduated. Well, enough said. Hello to everyone who attended. It was wonderful to see you. Jane and I are already planning a trip to Gloucester to see Sally. I think our password expresses the affection and respect we had for JGRS. I am sorry, you could not attend. My one regret is that somehow I missed Ed Dreeby (sp?) on Friday night. His American history class was fabulous. At one point in my many careers, I was a pretty fair American history teacher. Thanks, ED.

Suzy: sorry you weren't there, as a first-hand report would be ideal. But where are you? I recall the Bay Area in Calif. and if so, I'll be down over labor day weekend. By the way, I spent a week in Nova Scotia about five years ago on a photography workshop and its wonderful. Ric Russell: where are you in Oregon? Do you mind sharing a phone number?Anyone: historically speaking, how many other reunions have there been? I'm curious as to whether my classmates had one back in the 70's or 80's which I missed. I'll look forward to Reunion 2004 and hereby volunteer to help track down the Viewpoint folks of the late 50's and the early Barlow crew.

Hi Ho Everyone - It was just wonderful to hug & hug and gab & gab with all of you again. I have some great photos and as soon as my laser/computer/whiz friend comes back from summer vacation, I'll ask him to post them. If any of you are up Gloucester "The Perfect Storm" way, please give me a call. (I'm going to see the movie tomorrow. I only hope they don't try to do the Gloucester accent, ugh. By the way, locals call "The Crow's Nest" the "The Crab's Nest" for obvious reasons.) I loved the weekend, all of it, all of you. It is something wonderful to be a member of this miraculous family - love to you all, Sally

I finally got back into the loop, thanks to Graham and Juan. I saw Herb Morton yesterday and showed him what I have of my pictures--and I'm already losing names and faces, alas. I think I've at least gotten him to "subscribe."
I've now written each name on the back of each picture where possible so that i can send sets to Kit(though she won't be able to see but the clearest) and JGRS. I guess another task ahead for someone is to "update the yearbook" with current photographs, not that anyone could emulate those wonderful originals--speaking of which, I know you have my '66(?), Kathy--what weasle ripped off my '67 and '68??
I especially valued Saturday morning by the pond--my talks with so many of the rest of you were so brief. So our home at 482-A Smith Neck Rd., Dartmouth, Mass, is always open to all of you--if you're on the way to the Cape, for example. Thanks, Juan, for developing a list of e-mails by name so that I can write----especially to you, Ingrid--that was one of the the top half-dozen letters I've ever received.
Love--David

What can I add to all the eloquent words already posted here? The reunion was fabulous!!!
The new website is up (click the link above). Mostly the same with a few additions and changes. Watch your email for your password if you have forgotten it. The pictures I took at the reunion are up! Click on 'Reunion 2000' on the new website. Also, there will soon be a form on the alumni page, where you'll be able to input a short history/bio. Please use it! And soon the alumni list will be searchable by graduation year. So if your name on the alumni list *does not* have your year next to it, please email it to me so I can add it.
I loved seeing all of you. It wasn't enough. I want some more!

I confess to lurking on this site. I have enjoyed the messages and the chance to reconnect with those magic years. I regularly checked in to see the growing list of people who were planning to attend and to read the messages.
The reunion was quite special. I was among those who stretched it out into Sunday and was nearly the last to leave the campus. While the spot remains beautiful, clearly it was the people who made the experiences of years ago and last week so important to me. In explaining to family and friends what it was like, I realized how many people I did not get a chance to really talk to at the reunion. While the attendance was fantastic, as I go through the yearbooks, I am reminded of so many others that did not make it. So I hope that this forum and the internet can fill in the gaps. My thanks to Juan for setting up the website and to Jon for all that he did to make it possible for us to reconnect.
Unlike Jon and Leopold, I did not have a harrowing trip home. I was fortunate to be able decompress with old friends in New Hampshire before returning to the Northwest. I would like to extend an invitation to anyone from Barlow passing through Portland. Give me a call, you are welcome to stay here and I will be happy to show you the sights and or just visit.

Well, I just got back from a few days out on Long Island to unwind from the BIG EVENT and it WAS a big event, including the trip home as you know! And yes, I DID trade the old van in for a new car. Really had no choice......after all it did almost make it to 250,000 miles!Anyway, I will be trying to accumulate a list of careers for everyone, perhaps AFTER my next vacation starting next weekend in Nantucket. Then, when I'm REALLY rested, I will start the next phase.
And I do want to extend an invitation to ALL of you that whenever you might find yourself in the Connecticut area, PLEASE do not hesitate to stop by and, of course give me a call first. Would love to see you all. My home is always open to Barlow Family.
Oh and John Compton, we should start that private detective agency real soon so we can find those we haven't yet. I do appreciate your help on finding a bunch for this past event. You have been a big help and I do appreciate it. Now onward!!!
One last note: I will be contact those of you that I did not get to that still owe me some money from the reunion. I will contact each of you directly. Thanks again, everyone for all your love and support.
Ciao

Barlow Memories
Hidden in the foothills of the Berkshires,Now recognizable only to a few.Is a hillside cluster of buildings.Several paths connect the buildingsThat house memories of former youths.
Friendships were made.Trials were met.Productions presented.Projects were completed. All in the passing of a year.
To some it was a stepping stone into the future. To some a haven to look back on.To some a home for much of the year.To some a foreign experience. To all an adventure into the challenge of learning.
There are memories buried in the hill.Memories of Ice thick enough to skate down the hill.Memories of skiing on the hill behind the "New Dorm".Memories of swimming in the cold pond.Memories of walking the road to the White House.
Memories of working in clay in the basement of the Art Barn.Memories of playing music under a tree.Memories of looking at the stars.Memories of walking in the dark back to the dorm.Memories of sports competitions on the field.
There are memories of classes too.Biology class and the fetal pigs.Chemistry class and the smells.English class and the introduction into new worlds. Each one special, each one part of what we now are.
Some of the memories are of disappointments too.Of games not won.Of awards just missed.Of things you could not do.These too combine to create the whole.
On top of all this is the personal learning. Each of us learning to deal with the variance of people.Learning to work together and get a job done.Expanding ourselves to include others as our lives intersect.Evolving into the complex being that is a person.
These are the things that made Barlow special. The things that can never be taken away. The things that are hiding in the background. These are the building blocks that we use each dayTo grow and handle what the world throws our way.

Thank you very much Jon, Kathy and everyone who came. Especially Leopold who came from so far away. And thank you Bob Cordova for getting me on the list. It was wonderful to see everyone. How lucky we were to live for 4 years in such a beautiful environment. I am sure I didn't appreciate it quite so much as a teenager, but I was very happy being there last weekend. Let's do this again in five years. In the mean time let's keep in touch on the message board. It would be fun to get a list going of what everyone is doing for their careers. A new cause Jon. Take care everyone. Have a happy and safe 4th of July.

This is really just more of what everyone is saying but I found this a reunion a tremendous affirmation. An affirmation of the continuity of self...to be recognized and to recognize so many people from my past...but also an affirmation of memories. I believed that that was a wonderful time and that the people I knew were special...I was right! You are all still as warm and vibrant as I remembered! Thanks to everyone, but of course, especially Jon.

The Big Chill was Disney compared to our reunion. Never have I felt so insincere as that first evening, hurling myself , tearfully into some old friends arms , screaming his or her name ,only to go running off as I spyed the next guy coming around the bend. OY! Amazing to hear everyone's stories , both the ups and the downs. I feel like I have exquisite jet lag and I need to sleep for a week. Really fun to hang with y'all . Well everyone I see that some of you have already left your love, feelings and messages so I'm next. What a warm wild and wonderful time I had seeing all of you, catching up with alot of my pals(seems like we were together yesterday)and remembering all those things we learned together all those years ago. Some of you looked the same REALY,and oh the stories we shared all weekend. I know I was a pain with my resigning and signing of my yearbook but it did and now does mean so much to me.The campus was so green and clean,we never saw it in the summer when we attended Barlow.I wish I could have stayed with all of you later on Sat. night but I had so much fun I can hardly stand it.I feel sad it was so short but the emotional energy was almost too much for me,and so the timing of my exit was perfect.Sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to you all but we WILL do this again soon.I have some ideas about doing it here on Nantucket in the late fall and am doing homework on it already. Jon thanks again from me and I know all of us we couldn't have done this without all of your work, love and planning. BRAVO love Kathleen

I ended my Barlow trip with a walk through those wonderful woods. I found the lean-to. Its been enclosed, and there was a blue tarp on the roof, and there were rusty folding chairs outside and the ground in front had eroded. I am afraid that even through my nostalgia tinged rose colored glasses, it looked like a rural slum. Oh well. The woods were still the woods.Jon - Thank you Thank you Thank youLove to everyone.

I want to thank ALL of you that came to this wonderous event and for all the love you showed. I sincerely send it back to all of you. It was the most inspired experience I've had and will definitely plan the next one for 2004. My trip back home, however was more like an odyssey: started Saturday night when Beriah pointed out that my right headlight was out. Then it progressed to my AC not functioning too well. That progressed to a grumbling noise in my left front tire which seemed to get louder as the day went on for Sunday. I figured, oh probably some bearings going in the axle....well just before Dover Plains, the left front tire took off across the highway, luckily no car was coming from the opposite direction. I managed to pull the car off the road on the right and call for some assistance. No one was hurt, but it was an event. I had to put the tire back on with only 3 lug nuts, taking one off from each of the other tires, since I lost the ones from the left tire. Oh, and the "Previa" sign on back fell off all by itself. I think it was a sign or something to finally get a new vehicle. I was 200 miles short of reaching 250,000 miles on the car. So I guess I'll be buying a new car tomorrow morning! Other than that, hey, had a great time, love you all and see you in 5! Or sooner for anyone traveling through Connecticut.Ciao

It’s been wonderful to check the message board and feel the excitement and anticipation surrounding the reunion. I regret that I won’t be there (I live in L.A.) but my sister Jeanne will so I’ll get a first hand report from her. There are just a few of you from my era (71’-72’), Consuelo, Julie Marshall (?), Susannah Leete, Betsy Gault (we met through Mia Borgatta in Vermont, remember?). Brad Feidel, hopefully we’ll see you in L.A. or Santa Barbara sometime.. Anyhow, enjoy, dance, commune, walk the hills, and remember those crazy, wild, confusing teenage years. I’ll be there in spirit. Thank you John for your incredible devotion in putting together this gathering of the Barlow clan. -Georgianne Cowan

Barlow's from guppies in the water pitchersBarlow's from food fights on spaghetti nightBarlow's from -
I find it hard to believe that the three of us are the only Barlovians from the 60's with computers. Somehow I suspect there are a lot of lurkers out there.Best, Suzy

do everything, although you've come close. See you tomorrow. David
JGRS--Your sainted mother always was a convenient excuse for oh so many things! I'm sorry you won't be there, as seeing you again after all these years was high on the list of reasons for my coming. Herbert sends greetings.

I forgot to mention Peter Nixon's punch line: "Herb, I was the first one to class today!"

Claudia R, do you remember Peter Nixon's classic Inspector Clouseau aka Peter Sellers-inspired action in Herb Morton's algebra class? The scene: Herb M. is trying desperately to maintain order in the classroom after week-long disruptions, caused in great part by Peter Nixon's daily - purposely late - arrivals - boldly walking into class and saying "How's it goin' Herb?" Herb, in his Morton-esque way would stand there next to his brown leather briefcase - his face slowly turning red. This confrontational drama increased daily until one day Herb warns Peter N. "if you are ever late again..!!" Well, the next day Herb begins reading the class attendence list and comes to Peter's name, "Peter Nixon...Peter Nixon are you here?" The drama reaches a crescendo in the classroom. "Does anyone know where Peter is?" Herb irritatingly fumes, his face slowly turning red. After a few long minutes a sound is heard coming from the back of the room inside one of the enclosed metal coat bins - and lo and behold a door opens - and out pops Peter N. who boldly asks, "How's it goin' Herb?"

Hey Julie, Lillian must have liked you more than me becaues she bit me daily. Who remembers torturing poor Herbie Morton in algebra class ?. Most fun I've ever had. Once Peter Nixon climbed out the window mid clas and came back in the door muttering "Quite the hair"( if you remember that fine Barlow expression) ( maybe only us degenerates used it ). Dan Boffey also took particular pleasure in Herb baiting . We used to copy from each other's math tests. I flunked, and he must have too if he was copying from me.I remember a sit in at the Treat's house when Mark Dufault got expelled for getting caught in his girlfriend's room . Those were the days. Keep those food memories coming folks, Ugh,- that disgusting margarine drenched paint brush for toast - I'd forgotten............
