Does anyone have a current telephone number or address for JGRS. I tried to call to set a date to meet and used the number we have listed, but it's been "temporarily disconnected." Thanks, all.

And, W.F., I think one of our most famous grads might be Brenda Vaccaro.

Hi, Ingrid,

Sorry I've not checked in lately. My brother is not connected with the government. He's a teacher. His wife is an accountant. They just want to do the best by their son. They've actually contacted Putney and applications are enroute. There's apparently a whole group of people who live in Japan who send/have sent their kids to Putney. They're having a meeting in March and Jimmy's been in contact with a few. So, it looks like Harry might attend Putney...and I'd have my godson closer at hand!

If you want to send me your brother's email addy or phone number, I'll pass it on to Jim. Or I can send you Jimmy's email addy and phone to send to your brother. Thanks muchly.

And thanks to all who responded. Your information and advice was most helpful.

Love,

Naomi B

Hello Barlovians! What a delight to find this web sight! I am living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and work for a radio station as the chief engineer, DJ and development director. I started as a DJ there in 1979 and never left! During that time I was working for a medical electronics firm as a research technician. Last year quit and started working full time for the radio station. I have a 17 year old son and was married for 13 years! Wow, how the years have flown by. I have always wondered what has become of may folks from Barlow.

Dear fellow Barlovians,

Here's an earlier note I meant to post: Greetings! I was so glad to hear about your website! Please include me in your list of alumni. Would love to find out the whereabouts of graduates of classes of 1977 and 1978. I was formerly Gwen Feldman class of "77 (now Gwen Feldman Haaland with a Ph. D. in paleobotanical research)

I married my Barlow sweetheart Roald Haaland (Barlow Teacher Virginia Haaland's son) Still happily together after almost 24 years! We now have a beautiful 9 year old son and an incredibly smart 5 year old daughter. Both blond-haired and blue-eyed like their Scandinavian Father. In a way, they are products of a Barlow union. They would not exist if I had not been a student at the wonderful (but now sadly defunct) Barlow School.

So many great memories of camping in the old lean-to, painting and pottery in the old art barn, ballet class upstairs in the gambrel-roofed schoolhouse, natural history class taught by Claudia Thompson (in association with the Hudson Highland museum), "white-water" canoe classes, Winterim Star-gazing mini-class, and the best field trips and canoe camping excursions to the Adirondacks and N.H. Where is Patrick Collins who once taught literature class and printmaking? And former "Chalet Dorm Head" Toni Vincent? (She once grounded Roald from the dorm for jumping out my window after curfew, after she knocked on my door) I would love to locate old friends Ann Rutherford '77, Betsy Bliss '78, Sandy West '78, Mary Capolino and others. To all former comrades, please e-mail me.

hello Barlow - I wanted to share a bit of what I know about Lennie Beecher. As Jon said, he had major surgery - with a large portion of his intestinal tract removed. He has been in the hospital twice. I visited him after the first time, which was not long after the reunion. He was doing quite well and starting to eat, and gain his strength back when infections from the first surgery caused complications that required further hospitalization and surgery. From speaking with their daughter Tanya (a post-barlow daughter) it was really a life-threatening situation and the surgery was really "touch and go". I think it was that great Lennie Beecher SPIRIT that got him through it all and he is home. He is slowly starting to gain some weight back and having to depend less on the IV nutrition. Elise has been absolutely amazing through all of this. As he starts to recover, she has been relieved of the constant care-giving and is beginning to be able to return to some of her regular life. I know all collective Barlow healing energy sent their way would be appreciated and helpful. Elise asks that people not call - that it is very exhausting for him to talk alot on the phone. They do not have e-mail- But I know notes would be appreciated. Their address is 254 Upper Boiceville Rd, Boiceville, NY 12412. Regards to all - Graham Marks (class of 69)

In response to Joan Glabersons message: "Just found this website. Sorry I missed the reunion-invite me to the next one. Nice to remember the Barlow years" I agree wholeheartedly with this. Please invite me too. May I make a suggestion? One problem in reading your message board for those of us newcomers: please let the rest of us know who you are. Could you please post the year you graduated? (or attended Barlow?) Last names would be helpful too. I am Gwen D. Feldman Haaland who graduated from Barlow in the year 1977. I married Barlow teacher Virginia Haaland's son, Roald. I met and dated him while a student there ('76-'77.) Do any of you remember Howard Simon? He was the best art teacher I ever had. I can still picture him clearly, sketching a student during a class demonstration in the old art barn, perched high over the edge of the magical Barlow woods. Secret trails below the art barn led downhill 1/3 mile to a lean-to with a huge picture glass window overlooking the brook. I believe that it was the 2nd lean-to built (downstream from the old one that burned down.) What fantastic memories about sneaking out of the "Chalet" dorm (above the dining hall) after curfew with flashlights, picking up our hidden backpacks with sleeping bags outside behind the kitchen dumpster and quietly crossing the road in moonlight! None too easy navigating those winding trails at night. Ann Rutherford sometimes accompanied me in a week-end woodswalk in the dark. Memories of marshmellows around the campfire with the spring song of the brook just below us. Betsy Bliss and Mary Capolino joined us later. A few hours of freedom! Did any of you ever find the totem pole on the opposite side of the brook deep in the Barlow forest? Well, if I mention any more memories from the late '70s, you guys might fall asleep. Anyone care to share some memories from the '60s? Thanks from Gwen

I had the good fortune to drive by over the XMAS holidays. The Hill was clothed in a foot of snow.

What wonderful, worldly people met and tarried on that hillside I I drove by the hill last XMAS. It was cloaked in white--a real Northeast Winter for a change. Trudging up that hill before breakfast may have had something to with forming our collective ability to persevere.

I missed the reunion largely on account of distance--I moved to Seattle in January, 2000. Steve Grob and Walter Stitt sent me wonderful, descriptive emails that filled me in on the details.

The idea of the reunion put me back in touch with a couple of very special people. Scott Brown, another reunion non-attendee spent the weekend here in Seattle recently. We walked the waterfront and decided which fishing vessels we would NOT like to go to sea on.

For the curious I lived for a very long time in the Washington, DC area. I worked for a large non-profit organization and raised two wonderful boys who are now pretty much out in the world. I dealt with my empty nest by moving on, to Seattle. I work for the City and also do occasional consulting for clients from my Washington, DC years.

For recreation I enjoy making music with others, also spending as much time as I can out and about in the magnificent scenery that abounds in this neck of the world.

Happy 2001 to everybody.... Jack's note at the beginning of the website mentions the power of spring smells at Barlow, but winter there imprinted itself as strongly on me. I don't think I have ever again experienced quiet as total as an Amenia night after a deep, soft snow...

Does anyone have an email address for Lennie and Elise, or Lois Panos? I was so sorry to hear about both of them. I have a special connection to the Beechers as Elise lived with us when I was 6 and 7 years old while they were at the Museum School. It was incredible to have them as dorm parents later on and to have Lennie as an art teacher. I remember sneaking out of the dorm in the middle of the night to finish art projects. That kind of creative passion is a lovely memory particularly when I'm caught up in the tasks of daily living! I would love to hear from anyone...Valery Rockwell

Hi, Friends. I'm just checking in with you again to see what's up with whom, etc. Glad to see Teddy's found us. I was staggered by the news of Lenny's surgeries and of Louis' hearing loss. How awful. Teddy, you're finding us at this point in time is certainly a bright spot etching the new year. Thank you for it.

And Stacy, as always your beautifully written post brightened up a rather dreary humdrum day. Thank you, too.

Now, a favor, please: My brother and his wife live in Tokyo. Jimmy's interested in sending their son, Harry, to Putney in the fall. They have an ESOL program and Harry has spent most of his 14 years in Japan, and his English skills might do with some help by way of a formal program.

Are any of "us" still affiliated with Putney? Do Bob and Marylou have email? I can check that myself after I post. (Wouldn't it have been simpler to check that PRIOR to writing this? Nah!) Please email me directly if you can help out. Thanks.

Okay. I'm off. I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Love,

Naomi B

I just wanted to let everyone know that hadn't heard yet about Lennie Beecher and Louis Panos. As some of you may know, Lennie has been through a real rough time since just after the reunion last Spring. He has had some major surgery and it was touch and go for a while. He is still recouping at home, but still has a couple of months before he can paint again.

And as for Louis Panos, it seems that shortly after the reunion, his hearing failed and may have a type of altzeimers setting in. He is now residing somewhere in Millbrook, NY, the exact address I don't have just yet. His younger daughter and wife are attempting to take care of him AND his older daughter who seems to have some brain damage from an auto accident. What a way to end 2000! Along with the loss of Ben Hedges. I know we all have a lot to be thankful for with our good health, the ones that do, that is. I truly hope 2001 is a safe and healthy year for everyone.

Well, pals, I'm watching the 2000 winter solstice going over the edge, throwing back final light on all the west windows of New Haven. Tomorrow there will be a moment MORE of all this light until June 21st....which reminds me of one of the finest Junes of my life: June 2000. Thank you Jon Landers! And thank you Mr.Cordova for creating this place where we can continue to meet, satisfy curiosities, send affection, laugh, - and be comforted. In the last case,(and as the sun is now pausing) I think of Ben Hedges. It was with such a dull emptiness that I read of his death, and, later, burst into tears reading and looking at his memorial service program (his young daughters' earnest drawings of a story he told them about how he met their mother) and reading about him from his wife," A life well lived ". I wish I was more superstitious, and could say this incredible sunset tonight is something for which he's responsible. But while he was with us at Barlow, he certainly was full of the same exhuberance, reliability, energy. It was so good to be able to sit down this evening and dash out this feeling to people who knew him well, knew him once. Thank you guys, for bringing my usually prim, skeptical heart back to where it belongs. Happy, if sappy, time of year!

I think we should have a recount of who thinks we should have a recount! And if someone feels that this is not legal, then we should ask the US Supreme Court who THEY were voting for for president, though the answer seems quite obvious! The next step is to abolish the electoral college bull! Oh and, perhaps the PEOPLE of this country SHOULD have the last say OVER the US Supreme Court! What do you think about that? It would be nice to see this country run by the people again, you think?

Good evening all. I admit I live in one of "those" Florida counties where the hand counting of ballots is taking place. The only good thing (IMHO) that's come out of this fiasco so far is that the Florida Supreme Court affirmed that my vote actually counts and is (literally) counted! I can only hope the result of the election is NOT in favor of that spoiled little rich boy, brat, Dubbya. You know, I wasn't enamored of his father, but he had Bar to temper old Pappy. But GW has only Laura, and she's no comforter. She looks to be harder than sharp cheddar that's been left uncovered, in the refrigerator for a week or so! Nasty!!! And those wrinkles around her mouth -- what's with that? Well, I suppose if you have to put up with GW, there's a whole lotta lip-pursing going on...and I don't mean "pucker up!!"

Out with the old and in with the new and exciting stuff: I've seen the sonogram and it is good: My first grandchild is female and her name will be Gillian! It's amazing how much there is to see and know with the technology of today. My son plugged his camera into the sonogram machine and recorded the sonogram as it happened. And I watched it on my TV screen. Amazing!!! I've never seen that boy of mine so happy, so content. It gives me great peace.

More exciting news: I received a phone call this evening. "Hello." "Hello. Is this Naomi?" "It is I," I replied. "This is James Stewart." "Do you mean James Gilbert Rupert Stewart III," I asked. "Yes," he replied. I was floored, stunned, honored, surprised, pleased...all of the above. How lovely it was to speak with him...and his voice sounded as young and crisp as if 30 years had not passed, and it was just yesterday he explained fiefdoms. We'll get together after he returns from Spain. I'm excited to see him again after all these years.

It was JGRS who told me of Ben's passing. I'm so sad to learn of it. Ben was a kind, sweet, generous soul. I'll remember always his soft, huge, dark doe eyes and his ready smile. His passing leaves a hole in my heart.

On that note, friends, I'll bid you all a good night.

And in another note, I am throwing this out to the mysterious W.F. Gadot: could this be Ellen Foscue in disguise? JGRS seems to think it might be!!

Okay, so I messed up on my phone number in the latest Family Newsletter! One number is off and I was informed by Naomi about it. So, for the record, my home phone number is 203-431-6189 NOT 6180! So I was off a digit!!!!! Sometimes the computers do this by themselves! And if you really want to get a hold of me during the day, you can reach me on my cell phone at 203-470-0140. Always glad to hear from you all! And I too was saddened to hear of Ben Hedges passing. Kudos to Marc Lefkovics for making that pilgrimage to see him earlier on; wish I had made that trip too. I know he will be missed. And thanks to Juan for that new section for those that are not with us anymore.

I was so saddened to hear about Ben. He was my roomate in the New Dorm junior year (65-66). I remember our conversations, about everything, but when it was about soccer we could never agree. You see, I thought *I* was hot stuff on the soccer field. Then there was this one endless wrestling match. Well, OK, it DID end after a couple of hours but not with either of us being able to claim victory. We were an even match, and there were no hard feelings. And there was the talk about girls. For a while Liz Carlebach was his girlfriend. Now they are both gone.

As webmaster, I've added a new page to remember Barlovians who have moved on. You'll find it by clicking on the "In Memoriam" link on the Barlow Family page. Please email me if you know of anyone not there who is missed and should be remembered.

Hello Barlovian, I just discovered this site and am just starting to "catch up" by reading messages and looking around. Wonderful idea. I certianly think of Barlow and and many of my school and classmates ('68) often. I'll write more later but the briefest of updates includes I now live in Portland Oregon, and have more or less done so since 1968 after graduating Barlow. I'm a clinical psychologist in part time practice and a part time home focused father with 2 boys (12 and 10). My wife, Mary Jean works full time out of the home as an administrator for a school district. This weekend my mother, brother Harold (class of 67), his kids(ages 16 to 10) and wife, and sister Joan and her son are visiting (Harold from Philadelphia) for Thanksgiving so it's a very rare treat with family (and if you happen to respond to this before Monday, you could get in touch with us both with one message!)

More deatils and/or response later but for now let me say I'd love to hear from any of you. From time to time I've gotten bits of news about Barlow or individuals but really very little. Does anyone know ananything about what happened to Bob Chapman?

And Juan - I do remember you and will also tell Harold you're the webmaster. I think he knew you better? And I did hear about the site from Harold who did not know the URL but had learned of it from Ingrid Lefleur who I think now works in the same office he does (he's apublic defender). BTW, the idea of putting year books on line is great. What is invovled in this. I've not done anything with digital pipictures but might be able to eventually help with the 68 eyarbook if its not too, too time consuming and if an older Pentium 166 with a relatively slow modem is suitable? Anyway, glad the site is hear and I'm sure I'll enjoying hearing about and sharing with many of you.

My home phone number in Portland, Oregon, by the way, is 503-684-3953; work number is 503-224-7922.Email is DavidWKatz@CS.com

Hi everyone...I'm so sorry to have missed the reunion. Especially after reading the messages. I eagerly look forward to the one in 2005. Hello particularly to Scott, Willy Kaye, John, Ingrid,Graham, Claudia, and all the other people who I may not have mentioned. I didn't make it up to Barlow because we had just adopted our second child from China, Mei, who is 3 1/2 years old. Travelling with her has been difficult as she adjusts to life in a strange new world. We all are very happy ( I have another daughter from China, Cassandra, who is 8 years old whom I adopted as a single mother in '92. I have since gotten married and we adopted Mei together.) Emotionally I feel finally fit to be a parent, but physically too old! I am also very busy with my private practice as a psychotherapist and personal coach...please email me, I would love to hear from you all. Valery

Happy Thanksgiving, Barlovians. Thanks to Juan, Steve, and Graham, and the techies at my e-mail site, I've finally managed again to penetrate the sanctum sanctorum. I've been thinking about Ben Hedges all day. What I most remember were his herculean but vain attempts, some on the soccer field, but most especially in those squeeky luncheon meetings of various Barlovian delegates, held bi-weekly in Bob and Mary Lou's livingroom. Trying to build a successful, exciting educational community in those years was probably less possible than beating just about anyone in soccer. And how close we came. Ben always tried, always thought before he spoke, and, when he did speak, did so with conviction far above his years. What a person he must have been later on; I wish I'd known him then. Does anyone know how to spell "Kay-got-soo-ah?"

Dear Barlow gang, Some sad news. Ben Hedges ('67) died November 9th up in New Hampshire after a long and courageous fight with Hodgkins disease. He was a noble soul. I'll always remember his absolute aplomb as the center-halfback for the Barlow soccer team when I was there. I think that he lived his life the way he played soccer. Hello there venerable Barlovians! I was saddened to hear that Pony Simon had passed away. I remember nights at the Simons smoking her French cigarettes and listening to the "hot" music of her day--Django et al. Before her husband Howard dies he carved the new art barn door. I am the model for the guitarist on said door. What a time. Also, I'm trying to get in touch with other grad's from my years of attendance: 78-80. Bless you all.

I have been informed by the Kildonan School that Pony Simon, one of the art teachers that used to be at the campus has passed away on Saturday, October 14th. There will be a service at the St. Peters Episcopal Church in Lithow, NY on Sunday, October 22nd at 4:00 PM. It is located on Deep Hollow Road off Route 44. The school will have a reception following the service at the campus. The phone number for the Church is 845-677-9286. The School asks that if you plan to attend the service and reception to please e-mail them at proberts@kildonan.org I will post this on our website as well, but I wanted to e-mail you all since I believe we are not checking the bulletin board as much as we did prior to the reunion.

I hope to get back to a newsletter again soon especially for those that are not yet tuned into the Internet yet.

Hope all is well.

Attention Barlovians one and all-especially those who know/knew me- My mother's memoir has just been published and is available at your local bookstore or from Amazon and Barnes and Noble on line. She's been working on it for a couple of years, the reviews have been excellent, and every word is true. So, everyone, run out and get a copy. You'll be learning more than you ever wanted to know about my gene pool (my grandfather, one of the subjects of the book, was a thug and bootlegger, murdered at 29), but it's a hell of a story. Regards to all, Eric Read it, then e mail me. "Lost and Found", by Babette Hughes. Permanent Press

Here it is another Monday holiday here in rainy Nantucket,I am closed at my gallery today(closed on Mondays off season) and todys project was to plant all the bulbs that came in the mail that I forgot I ordered.Guess I'll have to do some real work and clean my house and pay bills. The real reason for this posting is to seek some information .My nephew who graduated from Roger Willams last may is trying to venture into the Stock and Investment world in NYC.Do any of you have info to help me give him some pointers in getting a job in this field.I have some stocks as i'm sure most of you do also but haven't got a clue about looking for jobs in this area.Any info or leads would be great. He's a good, honest person and he works hard.Of course he's probably no more prepared for the job he wants than we were after we graduated in the 70's or 80's.Any info would be great Thanks and have a great Holiday.Duncombe 1967,please email me directly

Hey Barlovians!! Check out W.F. Godot's contribution of the 1964 View!! All you have to do is click on the link in the previous message! (There is also a link on the BarloWeb homepage under the 'Barlow Memories' heading.) Then when you're done, consider doing the same with YOUR yearbooks. I would be happy to help with the details like removing all the personal inscriptions (with NO damage to the original, I promise) and then posting here on BarloWeb. Just let me know.

You're very welcome. I hope it serves as an example and motivates others on our list to get the other yearbooks up too. By mention of the "sponsor" I meant Photopoint.com who provides the webpages and format alternatives. They do so free (at least for now...and if they decide to charge or we get a better "parking lot" for such archived Barlow materials we could "move" them easily) My admonition about saving was dso no Barlovian would "buy their services for prints etc in case they are beginners in their cyber skills for collecting graphics .

And well you and the Editor should be. It is a masterpiece...in spirit and feeling it is o evocative. It is beautifully photographed and the design and layout is like nothing I've seen in "yearbooks" even since. It is a gem and a good beginning in the creation of what I hope could become a multimedia Barlow archive

....anyone got 8mm films from the Old days that could be convered to Quicktime movies, mpg or avi files or even streaming video????

As not only a memeber of the class of 1964, but the person who took 75 percent of the photos in the yearbook, I'd like to thank you for posting it here, but please-explain how it got posted, and who is sponsoring it? I personally am very proud of the book - it was one of the first times anywhere that non-formal photographs were used for senior pictures, and we worked really hard to make sure that most of the photos really showed the individuals in the manner they felt reflected their inner-selves. They were taken everywhere from the campus, to the middle of route 22, to Alice in Wonderland in Central Park, in the forests, and points in between. eric Blauhsild '64

My gift to you all is also my effort to stimulate more interaction and communication on this Message board can be seen at http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/barlow7028746629/myhomepage/profile.html

I challenge others to care enough to get more yearbooks on line (I'll help)

...and to get this website more immediate for cyber interaction and topical conversation threads

Enjoy.....

It is with great pleasure, pride and joy that I announce that my elder son, Adam, and his bride, Jami, will be presenting me with my first grandchild on or about 7 April. Life IS good!

Hi fellow mousketeers- summer has about one more hour left, I think, or is it on the 22nd.All those summer memories gone into the hard drive and hopefully backed up in the universal consciousness. Glad that you made it back safely from Paris, Ingrid. I've started a big trial with the id expert. Totally bogus procedures where the detective showed repeated pictures of the defendant in group viewing (of course that was partially because he has a rather active past) to obtain the id and then tried to cover it all up. grrrr. Mark's and my CDs are going to be on the web from England at Floot.com starting in October should anyone care to surf over that way Best to all of you in Barlowland-Scott

So who knows what a "URL" is, much less an "exact URL"? Actually, I had noticed that I was having to do the password thing twice, but thought I was screwing something up. Best wishes, Ingrid

John, and Barlovians, I recently discovered (thanks to W.F.Godot) that anyone knowing the exact URL could go directly to the Message Board without passing the BarloWeb home page and its password protection. I could bore you with all the technical details but... bottom line, the double password will remain a necessary inconvenience until I can figure out a workaround.
