Great news: My elder son, Adam, and his wife, Jami, are expecting again -- the due date's 8/8/2003! Now, Gillian will have a new baby brother or sister, and I'll have another little one to spoil.

As a post script to my last post, Adam has applied to the ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON Foundation and not the Archer Daniels Midland Foundation for his post-doctoral fellowship. Mea culpa.

As for my husband, Jerry: He's not doing well at all. Chemo has failed him, his liver is shutting down, and they'll try some radition to control the growth of the tumors. Your thoughts and prayers are, as always, greatly appreciated.

Wishing you all best wishes, love, happiness, joy and health for the holiday season and the new year.

Love, Naomi B (Solomon) Friedman '67

Lennie was before my time at Barlow, but looking at the picture of the campus on this site and thinking back on those days I can't help but think that his influence on so many of you must have been a silent legacy as well to we who came later. Here's an interesting character from the Barlow teacher's alumni. His name was Skip Gorman. A neat guy who really downplayed his music--at least that was my impression--but who has quite a lively music career going on. I spoke to him some years ago when I was living in Vermont and hustling for a buck at a tape duplication place called Protosound. Anyways, here's his website for some of you who may be interested: http://www.skipgorman.com/ I'm sorry I couldn't make the reunion. Bless you all.

I wound up (last 29 yrs) in a School of Art and attribute much of my happiness and sense of why I'm here to Lennie Beecher. Great man. More news. While in Maine, in barber shop awaiting my husband's annual haircut (no kidding), I picked up a USA Today and there was an excellent long story about Macy DeLong's work with the homeless in Boston and her evolution: biochemist at Harvard turned-street person and now a successful important community non-profit provider. Anyone else see it? Best to you all. When in New Haven CT (office), Guilford (home) or Noank (Noank Shipyard, SY Mars, every weekend), come by.

Well, I've got to admit, this was my very first Buddhist memorial I've ever been to, but it was one of the most memorable I'll ever experience. My heart goes out to the Beecher Family and all the pain they had to go through to the end. Lenny leaves a beautiful legacy of memories for all. It was nice to see such a mix of family, friends and Barlovians there for the service.

Hi, All,

I was thinking about Lennie and Elise and the kids today. And I thought of all those who were wonderful and available enough to be able to attend Lennie's memorial service. Know that my heart was with each of yours. Lennie's serenity, kindness, laughter, grace and creativity were a welcome respite during my internally-tumultous coming of age at Barlow. He and Elise set a wonderful example as adults, teachers, parents, friends and partners. I so admired their quiet strength and loving attitudes. Lennie certainly made an impact on me and he will truly be missed.

I am very sorry to have not been able to attend the reunion in June. Jon and Kathleen did a wonderful job (IMHO) of putting together a memorable occasion. I grieve over the hard feelings and hope they are all well-resolved.

My husband's health, although much improved since June, is not yet stable. More tumors were discovered on his liver and he begins a newly FDA-approved chemotherapeutic agent. This week, he'll have a port implanted for ease of access to his veins. Then, he'll be hooked up by a home health nurse for the 24-hour infusion this chemo takes. I'm sure he'll do quite well.

On a brighter note, my Japanese nephew, Harry, was admitted to Putney this fall. He seems to be adapting quite well. Additionally, my elder son, Adam, has 1) applied for tenure, 2) applied for a sabbatical, and 3) will be applying for an Archer Daniels Midland post doctoral fellowship. It merely serves to literally move my granddaughter, "Momshe'snotYOURbaby," farther away from me. Although I'm proud as a peacock for Adam, I'm heartbroken that they may have to move farther away for a year or two.

Finally (boy, this post is MUCH longer than I had anticipated), I plan to be in the Boston and Vermont area for Thanksgiving -- from 11/22 through 12/2, as a matter of fact. If there's anyone out there who might want to "play," please email me.

In the meanwhile, each of you take very good care of yourselves and your loved ones. Life's too short to screw up on that account.

Love, Naomi B (Solomon) Friedman '67

Some more detailed directions for any Barlovians planning on coming to the memorial service for Lennie on Sat Oct. 5.

New York State Thruway to Kingston exit Take RT.28 West head towards towns of Olive, Shokan, and Boiceville. About 15-20 minutes from Thruway On right look for sign that says "Tinker Tubes" Upper Boiceville Road is on your right just after the Tubes sign Make right and house is up road on left about 3/4 of mile.

If you miss the turn for Upper Boiceville Road keep going - soon on right you will see a eatery called "Bread Alone" and a totem pole - make a right there onto Desilva Road - go up hill till it dead-ends. Make right onto Upper Boiceville Road - house will be up on your right about 3/4 of a mile

Alot of people are expected so parking will be tricky - park on the side of the road where you see a spot - there will not be any parking right at the Beecher house

Dear Barlovians, I am writing with some further information about the memorial service for Lennie. It is on October 5 at 2:00pm. It is at the Beecher home, 245 Upper Boiceville Rd., Boiceville, N.Y. 12412. Boiceville is in the Catskills, off of Route 28 about 25 minutes west of the New York State Thruway. If you are coming from the east and headed west on Rt. 28 look for Boiceville on the map (near Olive and Shokan).Upper Boiceville Road goes off to your right. If you see the Boiceville supermarket on your left you have gone too far. The house is up the road about one mile on the left. It sounds like it will be a fitting tribute in the spirit of the man.... buddhist service, tree planting, storytellers, music and time for family members and others to speak. Elise is putting together a local hotel list for those that might need it. In response to Kathleens question about donations in Lennies name to the Kildonan School I asked Elise what the family thought about the idea - She was very touched that people were asking about doing this. She said that they are asking all donations to be made in Lenny's name to: The Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104. It has been wonderful and very special to hear from various Barlow friends during this sad time. Jon Landers said he will be coming to the memorial - I have heard from Carol Eaton, Sue Byrne, Brad Fiedel ( all '69) and Jeff Voorhees ('70) that they will be coming. As I hear any more details from Elise I will post them - Graham

I remember Elise, Lennie and the "kids" oh so very well. My particular mentor was Bela Arato, but that does not stop us here from knowing the loss of Lennie to this world and the world he gave us. I too regret not being there to see him at the Saturday part of the reunion and will carry his memory forward with me. Although it is unfortunate that living gives the exposure to grief, the grief is because of the life given us by those who pass that can no longer be here to share. Carry well the memories, lessons, education and friendship given by such as Lennie. This is the chalice we were given by those we knew at Barlow in our respective times in that community which goes forward. Lennie will be dearly missed from this world, but thanks to him this world is better for his having been here. Ted Wolcott

Dear All, It is with great sorrow that I write to tell the Barlow community that Lennie Beecher died early Friday morning August 30, 2002. He died peacefully, at home, with his family by his side. There is a memorial service planned for Oct.5 at the Beecher home, 245 Upper Boiceville Rd., Boiceville, N.Y. 12412. Boiceville is in the Catskills , off of Route 28 about 25 minutes west of the New York State Thruway. As I receive more details about the day I will post it. -regards to all - Graham

Dear Barlow family - I am writing with sad news..... Elise Beecher has asked me to let you all know that Lennie is close to dying.... a few days probably . Any thoughts, prayers, chants, good vibes, that can be sent their way at this time would be most appreciated. Carol (Eaton) London ('69) and myself and been with him and the family a number of times in these past weeks. He is at home and Erica, Svend, and Tanya are there. Cards and letters can be sent to : 245 Upper Boiceville Rd., Boiceville, NY 12412. Elise asks that there be no phone calls. Lennie loomed so large in my life - as I am sure he did for many of you- I can't quite believe this is happening - I would be glad to talk with anyone who wishes to call me to find out more about what is going on - Graham Marks - Home - 607-478-8178 office - 607-587-9401

Your comments were something positive in MY travels, yes. Now Bob Cordova's comment, THAT one made me laugh out loud ("truth is stranger than fiction....") and believe me, I needed a good laugh today! So, I guess it's just nice to be in touch with you, fellow Barlovians, of whatever era. Take care.

Hello to everyone! This is Bonnie Wolcott, Ted's wife from the class of '67. I would like to take a moment of everyone's time to say how much I enjoyed being at this years' reunion. Even though the weather was on the cool side, there was a warmth that eminated from everyone there that I met. Ted and I would have loved to stayed the entire weekend, but family obligations deemed otherwise. Jon and Allan, I greatly enjoyed meeting your significant others and please pass on a hearty hello to them as well.

Even though I am not a Barlow alumni, I would like to thank Jon, Kathleen and Naomi for their hard work in organizing this event. I would also like to add that it is definitely unfair that Jon is made to carry the burden of the expense for those not following through with their commitments.

I would definitely look forward to attending another reunion, as it was interesting to have met people with such diverse backgrounds and personalities. Having attended public school, I can definitely say that our reunions haven't been as enjoyable as the two I attended at Barlow.

I do believe that having another one as far down the line as 2005 or 2006 might be too far in the future, and feel it would be nice to have another one planned for 2004.

Once again a sincere hello to everyone I met and Godspeed.

I saw a man.

Over the years as I drive to and fro in my local area of southeastern PA, it is interesting how sometimes you take note of some regular occurances. One such was a man walking his dog.

Several times a week I would see this man and his dog in a brisk walk. Rain, snow or whatever the weather did not seem to have an adverse effect on them. The man looked to be over fifty, a good tan, in good shape (too many times wearing shorts for the weather) and I speculated that perhaps this was a regimine to heal from heart ailment. I also speculated that perhaps it was for the dog since this golden retriever was having so much fun in the walk! No matter what the reality for him, it gave me a smile many times. Smiles are good and healthy.

Last week I was on my way home and saw just the man. I had to stop. "I am sorry to bother you sir. You do not know me but I have seen you and your dog many times. Is the dog OK?" Answer was no, that the dog had passed away the previous Sunday. As grief struck as I was and feeling like I had stuck my foot in where it did not belong, the man said "Thank you for asking. It helps to know that people saw we loved each other".

I hope that you enjoy this little short story. It is true. Touching is not always tactile.

Regardless of what year you attended Barlow, it is true that there is this "family" aspect to the experience then and now. This man and his dog touched people without knowing them. Obviously he has gotten some in return as well. The good parts of life are all too fleeting and elusive so I hope you too will see something positive in your travels.

Take care, travel safe and enjoy the smiles when they come . . .

and now, for something completely different........................... any other mid 70s folks out there? just wondering. not that i don't feel at least a little bit of a bond w/ all you fellow barlovians who were before my time -- there WAS (IS) definitely something about the PLACE, that perhaps deeply affects, and ties us together -- it's just that i've never met y'all. (perhaps at some future reunion?? which i admire you guys for putting together, by the way.) anyway, just throwing a trial balloon out there seeing if anybody shoots at it. p.s. to Gwen Feldman Haaland, i greatly enjoyed your post about your fond memories of the place, especially the landscape, camping out, etc. -- very central to my barlow experience too. i never met you but i think i remember your husband. tho of course he wasnt your husband then -- he was probably, like, 15. his Mom was one of my favorite people there -- very thoughtful and helpful. anyway, be well, fellow barlovians. I am sorry to have missed the last reunion. I was lost in cyberspace.Let me know for the next one. Which, by the way, should be sooner not later. Okay everyone, I've been quiet long enough........any more issues on the reunion stuff should be e-mailed to me directly. I realize everyone has their own view on the subject; had I really cared so much about the money, I would have said so. I may not be Donald Trump, but I'm not a pauper either! So, let's get on with our lives and move forward.

I appreciate all support offered, and will accept it, but let's not use this medium to argue about our differences of opinion.

Ah, just like a family though, no?

Be well

Prior to some of the recent stuff written here I was wishing I could have gotten to the reunion... now I feel sort of relieved not to be involved. I do think that bile might have been better expressed in private emails, rather than here (if it needed to be expressed at all). Both points of view about how the money could be raised seem valid, but who needs the personal remarks?! I am glad people had such a good time at the reunion.

Nancy, thanks for your post. I know a Nancy Johnson in Loveland, CO. I doubt that you are one and the same, but I don't find you listed in "The Barlow Family." I looked under both Johnson and Homer...? Well, whether I know you or not, you sound like someone I'd LIKE to know!

Hey fellow and former Barlovians,

When I went to Barlow, I was in awe of all of you. I believed that you were all very rich, well brought up children having much more resources than I who came from the reservation and assorted foster homes, without a dime in my pocket and little or no social training. I didn't understand a lot of things then but I was grateful that some of you took me in and treated me like a friend and I will never forget that. What I understand now is that we are all human. We make mistakes. I also learned that you make your own way in this world and nothing is for free. What goes around comes around. I want to remember all you guys the way I did when I was a kid. Going to Barlow with all of you for the short time that I did, made me feel important, that I worth something and had something to live for. I hate to see you squabble over something as stupid as money. Money is nothing but memories are precious beyond all else. Jon, I'll send you a check for 300.88 and then, let's be done with it. Use anything left over to start the kitty for the next reunion. Thanks to you all, Nancy Johnson

Aha- I see...so because of the irresponsibility of others it's perfectly all right and acceptable for the rest of us to stand aside and let Jon Landers, the guy who absorbed large losses from the last reunion without even telling anyone, the guy who guaranteed out of his own pocket all the costs of this years' event., dig into his own pocket and pay the deficit.

Of course let's not forget that without Jon neither of these reunions never would have occurred, and without the reunion this message board would not even exist- just think-he created the vehicle by which we can decide to stiff him!

I'm convinced. Let's leave him dangling.

We'll all have more money for the next reunion.

Sorry, Kathleen, I disagree. However you feel about those that did not honor their commitments, Jon should not be out there all alone. As much as anything else, this is a moral position. Really, it's not a lot of money.

Some of us have already emailed Jon-whoever can should volunteer to split the shortage.

Furthermore, I do not think that this message board should be used to embarrass people. They know who they are.

Hey out there!!! As Alan,Eric and Myself have said this is not fair that Jon carries anymore exp. for those who didn't show nor pay fully...........I didn't know that he paid out of pocket much more at the last reunion......and I told Jon that if all Students who where there split the $300 it would be pennies for each of us.....and that Jon should not pat it all................I think that his not putting those name up is honorable and thusly we should "do the right thing!" by splitting it amongst "US"........what do you think??????..........let's not put this off till the next reunion ..speaking of if Jon is not sick of being ripped off and does it again he should make those who didn't pay....pay that which they still owe from this time and then pay by a deadline which I think should go for all of us paying by a deadline!!!.........come on guys......this is not right!!!! take care Constance

Hi all, it's your events planner reporting the numbers from the reunion. I'm not as short as I thought I would be, but here are the numbers:

Total deposits including Naomi's checks and some direct=$4740.27

Out of pocket costs are as follows:

Cascade Mtn Winery=$2230.44

Silo Ridge CntyClb=$2906.71

Kildonan School (incl rooms & brkf)= $904.00

Total out of pocket=$6041.15

Minus the $1000.00 deposit sent in by Naomi=5041.15

This leaves a shortage of $300.88 I had to pay out for the no shows.

Now this is no where as bad as in 2000. I won't go there! But I would appreciate your help. You no shows, you know who you are, but I will not list them. Just appreciate the fact we all had a good time. And thank you all.

Dear Suzy Eisenman and the rest -

My mother had expressed some trepidation about the trip – what would she have to say to these folks whom she couldn’t remember all that well and knew not very well in the first place, would she get tired and not be able to have a rest, all the completely reasonable concerns in the situation.

I picked her up at North Station on Friday after work – already we’re in travel mode, things are working and she’s beginning to be amused and have a good time. On our lovely drive through unbelievably green Western MA we start to talk about Barlow years and people, and I begin to realize the depth of her uneasiness. As we recall individuals, though, her positive approach begins to surface and she remembers something nice about each one. We arrive at the school in the early evening – it is absolutely beautiful there, and if you had never seen the hill wide open, with views from the top and bottom of the whole campus, you wouldn’t mind how enormous the trees that my father planted have grown, turning the areas around the Schoolhouse into a forest. We are directed to a restaurant a few dirt-road miles away, and our entrance – out of the fog and rain directly into a funky dining room where some thirty Barlow people are halfway through dinner – might have been a little awkward, if there had been any of them who remained seated and didn’t jump up to be among the first to greet her. But there weren’t.

Mom was swept away to talk to the Treats and students she did remember and especially Ted Tuttle, whom my father had hired on the spot when they met at a sailing camp I was at in the early 60’s. Like many others Ted had great respect for my father, unlike others he had the youthful energy and integrity to be part of the foundation of what hewas building. I know my mother thinks very highly of him. For those of you who have not encountered him since you were adolescent, JGRS turns out to be thoroughly enjoyable and charming(sorry to blow your cover, Jim). We were all so much younger...

We slept in one of the new dorms – after staying up late with old buddies I was a little slow off the mark in the morning, finally catching up with Mom in the Chalet Dining Room where she was holding court with a new coterie of admirers. People were remarkably sensitive and gentle with her – as she said several times all the “students” are older than she was when she left Barlow, and I’m sure there was some understanding of how complicated the dynamic of the event was for her. Later we walked around the campus and down the hill, telling ourselves that we didn’t really care that they had build a dorm that looked like a prison right at the top of the hill. Being alternately chagrined and amused at the power a place has after so many years, the combination of countryside, people and events remembered imperfectly and overlaid on a landscape slightly changed - not sure whether the lack of focus is bad memory or bad eyesight.

We had learned that Winnie Wing had died, so in the afternoon we went to the nursing home in Sharon where Mom had visited her last. The receptionist said “Oh, there used to be some St. Johns at that school next to my husband’s farm in Amenia,” and Mom was able to catch up with the widow of Bill Jeffries, who owned the farm next door and died of cancer a couple of years after my father. At dinner that night Ed Nickerson made a toast to Mom, using a quote from the Italian poet Gabriele d’Annunzio (I don’t know if he was aware that d’Annunzio’s grandson was one of my sister Susan’s boyfriends at Barlow…) “…and such great faith, and such grace, and such perfect memories…” - she got a standing ovation.

If the number of future Barlow reunions is limited – the entire alumni body is getting pretty long in the tooth and they're not making any more of us – both my mother and I are especially grateful for the chance to (re)connect with a group of people who shared, and still share, an unusual and remarkably positive mindset. I know Mom was really comfortable with the place and the people. I got enormous credit for “bringing” her, and basked in her reflected glory.

Thank you Jon, thank you Kathy, thank you Naomi. Make sure you let us know if you come up short.

Andrew

That was awesome!! I got back to Nashville last night after an incredible trip. As some of you know I stayed with my mother who is now 91, and then had business in Albany on Monday so I packed a lot in. The time at Barlow was amazing. It felt like pieces of my spirit that I hadn't known were loose clicked back into place. I wish I had had more time with each of you, and Kathleen, I missed you at lunch! It was wonderful to see the Treats and the Beechers as well as my old roommates Kathleen and Adrien and fellow Chalet dweller Kathryn, philosophy activists Nierenberg and Cordova and Steve Voorhees, and to find the Biology Path intact. Thanks to those of you who put so much time and heart into this, and thanks for helping me reconnect with that younger self. Love, Zo (Barlovian formerly known as Peggy Kunz). Oh, about the name: I always hated "Peggy," which is my mother's name. I dreamed the name Zo about 11 years ago and adopted it. That's it.

Thank you, Jon, Thank you Naomi (my thoughts are with you), and a special thanks to my roomie, Kathleen. I had a wonderful time, except that I'm never drinking Black Russians again for as long as I live. Kathy and I were just about the last celebrants left - we took a drive down to the pond and met a fellow there fishing with his son. They'd come from Long Island to spend Father's Day together at Barlow - he had no idea there was a reunion. Turned out he graduated in 1974 - Walter Ford is his name. We hooked him up with the family list and the web site, and made him promise to come to the next reunion.

To all who did not come to the "reunion": you missed. To all who came to the "reunion": you received. To those such as I who were there only for a while: we received. The crossover from attending in the 60's, 70's or whatever was still Barlow people and unique, fun and special. I laughed when the concept of staying in the dorms had come up, but have strongly kicked my own butt since that time for thinking that way. It was well worth the effort, time and money invested for the delicious pleasure of seeing some again, meeting others and most especially being on campus with others who were Barlow (regardless of when!). The primary people I knew organizing this event were Naomi, Jon and Kathleen. Naomi did a wonderful job of being responsible for the organizing of funds and receipts while coercing those whom she came into contact with to attend even if just for a little while (she was right!). Jon ended up underwriting the 2000 event (not right!) and yet entered this event with open arms. He provided the stage and those who made it there appreciate his work so very much! Kathleen's participation went straight to the heart of Barlow (along with those of Naomi and Jon): help, achieve, care and to hell with anybody that doesn't like it! Reunions are a strange thing to anticipate, what with the trepidation over what you might remember and what those you meet might, while those who do not come to a Barlow reunion unfortunately missed the flavor. Those who were there, and I can only speak for myself and my wife, had a great time. To those we missed: sorry, it would have been nice. To those we saw: Thank you. It does not matter whether I or you are remembered as much as it does that we all remember Barlow. Ted Wolcott ('65 fall arrival, '67 Grad)

Jon Landers: Thank you so much for your kind words regarding the music and your work setting up such a marvelous event. You deserve much credit. I'm glad Malt Liquor could adjust the volume to a suitable level, and that people even got out on the dance floor. I'd very much like to help provide entertainment for future events. It was a pleasure meeting you and the Barlow alumnae from so many previous years. To Constance: God bless you. And to the rest of the Barlow alums: Love, love, love.

Sincerely,

Dean

Okay, I just want to thank you all that made this reunion a success once again and for all the support shown to get it right. I'm sorry to see that some of you could not make it the last minute as it was a memorable weekend. it was great to see two generations of headmasters at one place along with a number of faculty. I truly enjoyed seeing James G.R. Stewart and Ted Tuttle after all these years. Except for a few alterations from time, they look the same to me!

I want to especially thank and send my best regards to Naomi for all the time and effort she put into the financial end of things controlling the incoming checks and keeping just a great record of all transactions. We truly missed you at this years get-together and our thoughts are with you.

I want to thank Kathleen Duncombe for her assitance in organizing the meal and wine choices at Cascade Mtn Winery; the choices were delicious!

Saturday night's dinner at the Cascade went very well and I'm beginning to learn that it can sometimes be more intimate with a smaller group and/or just no live music so everyone could talk more easlier. It probably would have been better had the weather been clearer so people could walk outside on the terrace of the Silo Ridge Country Club to talk while the music was still playing; unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

I do want to thank Dean Orser Yuliano '80 for taking the time and effort to bring his band, Malt Liquor, up to perform for us; I only am sorry most of the people attending didn't want the music too loud as it would normally be for an event such as this. It took a lot of time and effort to come up to Amenia, set up all the instruments, make sure the sound system was adjusted correctly (I know how much time that takes from working with groups over the years) and only playing for a short time. They had a great sound and I hope to see them perform again somewhere in the near future. Kudos to you, Dean!

As for the rest of you Barlovians that attended, a big heart felt thank you for all the kind words and memorable stories that were reminisced on over the weekend. As for those that simply couldn't make it this year, do not fear, for 2005,6 or 7 is near!!!!!

Oh, and I want to also thank Ron Wilson, Kildonan's headmaster, for being so cooperative with allowing us to use the campus once again. I know you will be hearing from some of us real soon about setting up an endowment fund, for lack of a better term, to offer scholarships for Kildonan to show our appreciation for using the campus and allowing us to use it for years to come.

Best regards to you all.

I just got back from the reunion and had a great time. I was sorry that more people from my class were not there (Ingrid (Lafleur) Yurcheno and I were the only representatives from '69) but the opportunity to visit with JGRS, Bob and Marylou Treat, John Hamm and others from that era was wonderful. But in addition to that, I was struck by how comfortable, accepted and welcomed I felt by those that I didn't know or know well. In thinking about Barlow I realize that it was the sense of community and belonging which made it such a special place for me during my time there as a student....and that sense of belonging still exists. The Alumni list that Jon Landers put together is aptly titled, "The Barlow Family" . Thanks Jon, Naomi(Solomon) Friedman, Jack Cordova and all the others who helped make the reunion possible and in keeping the family together. And thanks to all those who came. I hope to be there next time and see even more Barlovians.

Okay, we're getting down to crunch time here!

I should add that if the weather turns out to be rainy on Saturday, we have the option of having our "picnic" either at the school cafeteria or school house or some other place to be announced by Friday night at Cascade. Hopefully, we won't have to make any changes. Perhaps the Hamms or Steve Voorhees could bring a large enough tent for us ALL to fit into under adverse weather conditions!!!!!! Just kidding!

Not for lack of trying, but Joan Silverson and I have been unable to round up any folks from the early 60's to come to the reunion. Manyof our classmates we simply cannot track down. So although I might like to make new friends, its seeing old classmates that would be the incentive. Please continue to hold reunions and we will keep sleuthing. And, as we used to say back then, "have a blast". Love to the St. John's and a message for them: is there anyone from our era you know how to reach? Judith Bernstein

Just another update for the reunion: To gain access to any of the meals planned at either the Cascade Mtn Winery, The school cafeteria or Silo Ridge Country Club, you will have to have a meal ticket that will be handed out on either Friday or Saturday before the events by myself. No meal ticket, no meal, so be sure to see me for these when you arrive at the campus. I will be at the Schoolhouse on Friday around noon and Saturday at the pond for the picknic.

I live in San Francisco. It's too late for me to get organized for this year's reunion, but I envy those who are going.

I'd love to make contact with Billy Lipschitz, who was my roommate. Does anyone have any news of him?

OK, folks. Time to apologize again for the unreliable nature of this message board. The problem--why it periodically loses the messages--is an error in the software (written by me :-( ) that runs it. I have tried to find and correct the error without success. So I have decided to replace it with a commercial product called DISCUS. Installing this software is a bit of a major project so in the mean time I would ask you all to bear with me and save the page each time you visit.

Here's how: While in the Message Board, in your browser, click on: File > Save As...

then click on "OK"

Simple as that. Then if this happens again, you can attach the file to an email, send it to me and I will restore the missing messages.

I just received the following post from Josh Kay ('69):

Hello Naomi!

I justed wanted you guys to know how much I appreciate the efforts your putting in to keep Barlow's memory alive. It's important to me, as well as to every other Barlovian, I think.

I am now in Tacoma, Washington, and unfortunately Iwas just East two weeks ago for my son's graduation from NYU, and I must be down in California and Texas for business reasons at the time of this upcoming event.

PLease know that I will try to make it back to upstate NY in the coming years.

As a side note, my son (who had remained in New York), his girlfriend, and a number of otherf riends of theirs spend this very memorial day weekend at a cabin in the Duchess Country area. I spoke to him on his cell phone as he was driving up the NY Thruway, and had fun telling him about Barlow and the beautiful road along Route 22. It brought back many warm memories.

Please give my very best to everyone, and let them know that you all are in my thoughts.

Also, let me know if you need some contributions for gifts, appreciations, etc.

All my best,

Joshua Kay (Class of '69) Tacoma, WA

Hi, People.

We are in a precarious situation here. All dinners must be paid for in advance of the events (i.e. Silo Ridge $50 per person, and Cascade Winery $40 per person -- tips not included), or the events cannot take place. Please get your checks to me ASAP. Make they payable to Barlow Reunion, and mail them to me at 1731 NW 108 Ave., Pembroke Pines, FL 33026.

Kathleen Duncombe has worked very hard on organizing the Cascade Winery event, and if we don't have some money ASAP, it will be cancelled....and neither Kathleen nor I is cooking!!!

Thank you in advance.

Okay, there may be a slight change of plans for Saturday's lunch; it was advised that due to the big meal we have planned for Saturday night, we might just have an informal lunch picnick where we bring our own food; this would also save on the budget of all the other events. I would love all of your feed back. We could still have the breakfast in the cafeteria on campus Saturday morning and leave lunch up to us individually bringing it to where ever we want to have it. This would also free us up as to location. We could do it at the pond if you prefer or just by the school house. Let me know your thoughts.

Here's the rest of the story for the reunion:

The picnick lunch will run $25.00 per person and will include: BBQ Chicken Potatoe Salad Cole Slaw Baked Beans Rolls 4 Bean Salad Lemonade and fruit punch Watermelon Brownies

We also can offer those of you that are staying on campus or anyone else for that matter a breakfast on Saturday morning for $5.00 per person which will consist of :

scrambled eggs bacon toast coffee, tea fruit juice

I need to know who would want to have this as well as we need a head count by no later than June 1st. Thank you all again.

Okay, to review the upcoming reunion, I have the following planned with the help of Kathleen and Naomi in the background, or actually the foreground!

Friday, June 14th, you are more than welcome to arrive on the campus anytime during the day. I hope to get there early enough to check you all in and get those of you staying in the dorms settled. We will be at the Cascade Mtn Winery and Restaurant for Friday evening as Kathleen has mentioned. The cost for this event will be $40.00 per person. I hope to have some live entertainment for both nights. Perhaps myself included; I will bring my keyboard and anyone else that's up to it is welcome to also.

I'm still working out the details for the Saturday lunch picnick on the campus put on by the school kitchen; news to follow.

As for Saturday night, it's at the Silo Ridge Country Club on Route 22 just south of the town of Amenia. This will run $50.00 per person and you can expect to get a really classy meal here; I've already sampled the fair and it's deilicious!!

For Saturday night, we have Malt Liquor playing, a band with one of our own alumnae, Dean Yuliano; should be good.

I have tentatively signed up a jug band sound for Friday night; his name is Vince Lucie and he is someone I've been networking with at East Coast Music right here in Danbury. My intention is to also have Leila and Bobby Tammaro performing here Friday however it really depends on their schedule as Leila is fast becoming a success in her own right and one of the big labels may be tying her time up by the time we get to the reunion.

Leila has a web site if you're interested at www.leilasworld.com

She has a fantastic voice and recorded one of my songs as some of you already know. Anyway, time will tell.

Thanks again for all your support for this years event and look forward to seeing you all there.

Hi, All,

Sorry for the delay in posting these days. We were forced out of our home because of an unplanned renovation that couldn't wait. Plus, my husband' health is a pressure. Plus, we're back in our home, living in the master bedroom -- because that's the only room that either is not under construction or stacked to the ceiling with furniture.

I'm using our eldest daughter's laptop on the floor beside the high boy and little light. I will confirm receiving a deposit from Jean Bennett for two nights in the dorm and the Sat. dinner, but can't get to my computer to make the deposit or send a receipt.

If I owe anybody else anything...including answers to questions...please be either 1)patient or 2) ask Jon Landers (JLBGood@aol.com).

The schedule thus far is: Fri. 6/14 dinner at Cascade Winery $40 p.p. at 6:30. Sat. at _________ Country Club, price TBD, time TBD. Sunday, I believe there's a picnic on campus...right, Jon? Please feel free to fill in any details.

On a personal note, if anyone has any information whatsoever on Hepatic Arterial Infusion (HAI) pumps, please contact me ASAP. We'll find out Friday if that's what the docs have in mind for my husband's continued treatment after 5 months of neoadjuvent chemotherapy.

Thanks.

Love to all, Naomi B (Solomon) Friedman '67

I'm getting concerned about the level of attendance at Barlowfest 2002. However, allow me to issue the following commitment: DEAN (ORSER) YULIANO WILL BE THERE WITH AXE IN HAND, BACKED BY DRUMS AND BASS. BIG DEAL, YOU SAY? Yeah, me too.

My point is that we're all moving forward in life, and I'd like to see all of you and have a little fun in between. I hope to see plenty of smiles across your faces.

Sincerely, Dean

OK CREW finally spoke to the Cascade Winery tonight the chef to be exact,he and I are working out the menue and it will be really nice a grown up one at that, some of his ideas are great. We're going with the UPSCALsandwich fixings(not sliced ham, turkey and cheese) Crusty breads great salads and for desert cheeses and fruit etc, wine tea coffee etc.I'll choose the wine too(trust me I know my stuff) The cost per person will be 40.00 a little more than I had planned for 5dollars to be exact but it will be fine.We have the use of the property from 5:30 pm until 12midnight not like the last time when they wanted us out at (if I remember 8:30 or so) we have the use of their tent and will eat outside on the deck.Food will start at 6:15pm and those that arrive at 5:30 until then can sit and relax and have a drink.Sounds good to me.I'll keep you posted Kathleen

Just a note that the latest count for the reunion is up to 52 people; not bad at this time. I'm giving you all another 3 weeks to make up your mind if you still want to join the rest of us. I did leave out a few names from the last newsletter, so here are the additional people coming: Andrew Cook, Bob & Marylou Treat, Carol Grant, Charles Bookman, Jeanne Cowan, Kristi (Heller) Agniel, Marc Lefkovics, Priscilla (Gould) Stevens, Val Thomas, Vicki Rudnitzsky, Walter Stitt, Jamie O'Connell, John Bernson, Jean Bennett, Nancy (Homer) Johnson. That's it for now! Ciao

I just wanted to take a moment to bring your attention to one of our classmate's efforts to help those less fortunate than most of us. It's Macy Delong and please check her web site at www.solutionsatwork.org It's nice to see someone really working for the less fortunate. By the way, Macy will be joining us this June. Thanks again for all your support out there and look forward seeing you all.

Hi everyone. I must apologize here to Andrew St. John and his mom..... it seems I listed Francis St. John as coming to the reunion in my newsletter when it should have been Constance St. John. Again my apologies, I must have been on something or another or just experiencing my mid-life crisis blues of which I wrote a song to. The CD will be availble to listen to at the reunion. Just a fun song, of course. But at my age, my memory seems to be failing from time to time. And with my new business and all, the stress may be a factor as well. Looking forward to seeing you all. And, oh yes, if you didn't see your name in the newsletter, it's because I didn't bother to ask for an update list from Naomi; my oversight again. I will update the list here real soon.............if I don't forget......!!!! Ciao

Hi folks, I'm afraid I'm not planning a trip east this summer, so all you English majors can take this opportunity to write it up good. Seriously, I apologize to you all, to Stitch Waller and Judith Bernstein and Andrew St. John, all of whom I would dearly love to see. I continue to live in Victoria, B.C., working out at the pool and zipping around in my candy apple red wheelchair. Suzy Eisenman Restino, class of '61
